About Jam Roll

A Unique Piece of Scouting History
Jam Roll is far more than a vintage motor car. This remarkable 1929 Rolls-Royce 20HP was presented to Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout Movement, at the 1929 World Jamboree held at Arrowe Park. Scouts from around the world each contributed a penny towards the purchase, creating a lasting gift that celebrated the movement’s 21st birthday and Baden-Powell’s vision of inspiring young people through adventure, service and leadership.

Why the Name “Jam Roll”?
The vehicle became affectionately known as “Jam Roll”, combining references to the Jamboree where it was presented and the Rolls-Royce marque. Over the decades, the name has become synonymous with one of the most treasured artefacts in Scouting heritage.

A Car Like No Other
Jam Roll is truly unique. In place of the traditional Rolls-Royce Spirit of Ecstasy on the radiator stands the Scout Fleur-de-Lys, engraved with the movement’s enduring motto: “Be Prepared”. This distinctive feature symbolises the deep connection between Scouting and the vehicle, making it unlike any other Rolls-Royce in the world.

Preserving the Legacy
Following Baden-Powell’s death, the car passed into private ownership before being secured for future generations through the efforts of dedicated Scouting supporters and heritage enthusiasts. In 2008, the charitable trust B-P Jam Roll Ltd was established to ensure the vehicle remained in the United Kingdom and could continue to tell its extraordinary story. Painstaking restoration work carried out by volunteers and specialists has preserved Jam Roll’s authenticity while returning it to its former splendour.

Jam Roll Today
Today, Jam Roll is proudly displayed at The Great British Car Journey in Ambergate, Derbyshire, where visitors can experience an important chapter of both British motoring and Scouting history. While on display, the vehicle continues to attend selected Scout and heritage events, inspiring new generations with the story of Baden-Powell, the World Jamboree and the millions of young people whose lives have been shaped by Scouting.

Supporting the Future
As a living piece of history, Jam Roll relies on ongoing care and stewardship. Donations and patron support help fund its preservation, maintenance and educational outreach, ensuring that this unique symbol of Scouting heritage remains accessible for generations to come. Every contribution helps safeguard the legacy of the founder and the values that continue to unite Scouts across the world.
